Second Sunday of Advent

Advent Call to Worship

Let us prepare our hearts as we await the coming of our Lord.

Let us watch for the one who heard our cries and shouldered the suffering of our world.

Let us anticipate the coming of  Christ's eternal world with wholeness, reconciliation and plenty for all.

Let us wait in expectation for the day when God's glory is revealed in all its fulness.

Pope Francis Writes in NYT

On November 26, the New York Times published an opinion piece from Pope Francis, "Pope Francis: A Crisis Reveals What Is in Our Hearts". Below is an excerpt from this inspiring article and the link to read it in full.

To come out of this pandemic better than we went in, we must let ourselves be touched by others’ pain.

Sometimes, when you think globally, you can be paralyzed: There are so many places of apparently ceaseless conflict; there’s so much suffering and need. I find it helps to focus on concrete situations: You see faces looking for life and love in the reality of each person, of each people. You see hope written in the story of every nation, glorious because it’s a story of daily struggle, of lives broken in self-sacrifice. So rather than overwhelm you, it invites you to ponder and to respond with hope.

AUSCP Leadership Team Sends Letter to USCCB

As a follow-up to the recent national elections, the AUSCP Leadership Team sent a letter to Archbishop Gomez and the leadership of USCCB expressing dismay at the partisan actions by some priests, bishops, and lay Catholic associations during the campaign. In addition, the letter said:

The election is over. During the months and years ahead we pray that your leadership as Catholic bishops will emerge to unite, not divide; to heal, not to hurt. We urge you to follow the example of Pope Francis and, Archbishop Gomez, of your own initial statement after the election. The pope phoned Joseph Biden to congratulate him. They spoke of how they can work together on issues of the marginalized, the poor, the crisis of climate change and welcoming and integrating immigrants and refugees.

We are convinced that President-elect Biden believes in our common Catholic social teachings. By choosing to work with him, we will insist on our unwavering care for the unborn while promoting the life of all, the elderly, the poor and the imprisoned. We also believe we will do more to promote a reform of immigration that respects our borders and yet welcomes the stranger seeking asylum. We also think we will be able to work together to make sure that health care is available for all.

AUSCP Leadership Team Endorses LCWR Statement

The Auscp Leadership Team supports the public statement made by LCWR following the November election: LCWR Pledges to Work with Administration to Heal the Nation. The statement says, in part: Now is the time to make space in our hearts and our communities for the needs and concerns of all God’s people, the undocumented mother, the Midwest farmer, the unemployed steel-worker, the suburban business woman, and the children and elders consigned to live in poverty. It is time to tear down the walls, real or imagined, which divide us by gender, race, class, geography, lifestyle, ideology, political party, and religious belief and to make room in our body politic for all who have been disaffected, disenfranchised, and discarded.

Now is the time to banish the fear that infects our souls and diminishes our hope. There is no room in this nation for fear of the other; no need to fear change; no reason to fear the future. This is a nation built on the dreams of our ancestors and the visions of our children. Our task is to make room at the table for every voice and every vision.

You can read the entire statement HERE.

Catholics Can Take Covid-19 Vaccines

Some Catholic bishops recently sent out a false message that Catholics cannot take the COVID-19 vaccines that will soon be on the market. The reason given was that the vaccines contain aborted fetal tissue. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops followed with a memo to all U.S. bishops stating that at least two of the vaccines are ethically sound, those produced by Pfizer and Moderna. The memo also states that church teaching allows for use of vaccines whose origins are considered ethically unsound if other treatments are not available.

An article in America Magazine (November 23) by Michael J. O'Loughlin gives further information.

Annual Appeal Progress

The Annual Appeal is the main source of income for the AUSCP! This year's goal is $150,000 from 500 donors. We need the support of all who believe in furthering the spirit of Vatican II and the agenda of Pope Francis. If you know any persons who are possible supporters of the AUSCP, please approach them for a donation. Thank you to 329 who have already responded, with total donations of $55.781. We are on our way, but have a long way to go to reach our goal!

Thank you for whatever support you are able to offer! We are counting on your generosity to help us move forward.
