Celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr.

January 21, 2019

Jesus - and others who followed after him - like Paul and Francis and Clare of Assisi - made room for the new by letting go of the old. Jesus had the courage and clarity to sort out what was perennial wisdom from what was unreal, passing, merely cultural, or even destructive. John the Baptist described Jesus as a "winnowing fan" that separates the grain from the chaff (Matthew 3:12). If we don't winnow, we spend a lot of time protecting the "chaff" or non-essentials."

Pope Francis Sends Letter to U.S. Bishops

A letter from Pope Francis (letter to U.S. bishops), was read to the 280 bishops who attended a retreat January 2-8 at Mundelein. The eight-page letter said, in part:

"God's faithful people and the Church's mission continue to suffer greatly as a result of abuses of power and conscience and sexual abuse, and the poor way that they were handled, as well as the pain of seeing an episcopate lacking in unity and concentrated more on pointing fingers than on seeking paths of reconciliation."

The pope had requested this retreat as part of the bishops' response to renewed attention on clergy sexual abuse.

The text of the talks delivered by Capuchin Fr. Raniero Cantalamessa, preacher of the papal household, to the U.S. bishops during their retreat at Mundelein Seminary are available at this link.

NCR online (Jan. 11) has an article by Tom Roberts on the retreat talks which you can access HERE.

Annual Appeal

The Annual Appeal has reached $95,420 from 261 donors. We are getting close to our goal!

Our goal for this year's appeal is to receive donations from 350 donors for a grand total of $100,000. This would represent a 40 percent increase over last year's appeal and would enable the AUSCP to move forward with plans to reach every priest in the U.S. with our message of hope and joy.

Reduce Your 2019 Assembly Cost by $200

If you reserve your hotel room soon for the June Assembly in St. Louis, you will see an offer for a Marriott Credit Card. If you do not now, or within the last 2 years, have a Marriott Credit Card, you can apply for one and get a $200 credit on the card IF you make a purchase within 3 months. Once you have the card you could register for the Assembly online with your card, and $200 of that $495 fee will be covered by your credit! (You also get 2 free nights at a Marriott hotel IF you charge $3000 on your Marriott Card within 3 months of getting it.)

For the first year there is no fee; in the second year, a fee of $95. If you wish, you can cancel the card before the renewal date. Be sure to look at the conditions. If it makes sense to you, AUSCP's 2019 Assembly will be yours at significantly reduced cost.

In Christ with Hope, Joy & all Blessings,
