 AUSCP & Contemplation

During AUSCP’s 2019 Assembly in St. Louis, Sr. Suzanne Giblin, CSJ, will lead us in contemplative dialogue and prayer. AUSCP’s Leadership Team met with her during our January Retreat. She left us all a more deeply bonded group with one another and our Triune God. She is working with us now to weave a contemplative thread throughout our 8th Assembly. This will help us bond more fully with one another in Christ our priest. It will deepen the impact of our keynoters on our sense of ourselves as God’s Priestly People. Don’t miss this!

Register now to join us in St. Louis!

Black History Month

Before Black History Month (February) is over, be sure to check out a special page on the AUSCP website devoted to this topic. There is a link to an eloquent and dynamic talk by Sr. Patricia Chappell of Pax Christi given to a Jesuit teach-in for Justice and captured by America Media.  The same page has a link to the enlightening presentation given by Bryan Massingale, SJ, at the 2017 AUSCP Assembly, plus other resources.

St. John XXIII Awardees

As previously announced, the awardees for the 2019 St. John XXIII Awards are Fr. Richard Creason and Sr. Norma Pimental, MJ.

Richard Creason, a Founding Father of the AUSCP, served the Archdiocese of St. Louis for 49 years before health issues forced his retirement. He is known as a leader in Social Justice and service to others. He served at Most Holy Trinity Parish from 1995 until his retirement in 2016.

The majority of Rich Creason’s years of ministry were in the old center of St. Louis, witnessing to the love of God among those suffering from poverty and racial prejudice. Rich notes that his attraction to the AUSCP includes its sense of collegiality, its commitment to solidarity with the poor, and the struggle to empower the people.

Sr. Norma Pimentel, MJ, member of the Missionaries of Jesus, Executive Director of Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley, Diocese of Brownsville, since 2008. Services include emergency food and shelter, housing assistance, clinical counseling and pregnancy care.

Sr. Norma helped organize local response to the 2014 surge of Central Americans seeking asylum in the United States. This included establishing the Humanitarian Respite Center in McAllen, Texas. She said immigrants coming to the center are exhausted and traumatized by the experience. Her biggest concern is parents being deported to their home countries without their children.

A new problem now confronts her because the city of McAllen recently voted to deny Catholic Charities a permit to continue operating in the former nursing home where the respite center is now located. She has 90 days to vacate. You can read the account of this HERE.

Articles on Sexual Abuse Cover-Up

NCR has published a series of articles on the sexual abuse issue. In one of the articles, writer Jason Berry concludes:

"For a reform agenda to succeed, Francis needs a policy on the issue he has identified, in sometimes scalding rhetoric: clericalism, the pursuit of power by the clerical culture at the expense of laypeople. The calcified power structure of men covering up for men will not change itself. One way to begin that change is to install women reformers in the College of Cardinals, further breaking from Italian hierarchs, who have controlled the Roman Curia for generations. The pope has the power to elevate women as cardinals if he so chooses; John Paul offered a seat to Mother Teresa, who declined. That is a power Pope Francis should forcefully use."

Postcard to All Priests

All priests listed in the Kenedy Directory have received a postcard to invite them to the June Assembly in St. Louis. This is part of an all out effort to expand the awareness and membership of the AUSCP. Since the best approach is a personal one, please invite at least one of those you know to join the AUSCP and to participate in the June Assembly. (A second postcard will be sent in March.)

Annual Appeal Monetary Goal Reached!

The Annual Appeal has reached $104,300 from 304 donors. Thank you to all who made this possible! Our goal for this year's appeal was to receive donations from 350 donors for a grand total of $100,000. We are most grateful to all who have donated and still hope to hear from more to reach our goal of 350 donors.

A primary focus for this year is expanding the voice of the AUSCP. Every donation, large or small, helps us toward our goal.

Reduce Your 2019 Assembly Cost by $200

When you reserve your hotel room for the Assembly, you will see an offer for a Marriott Credit Card. If you have not had one within the last 2 years, you can apply and get a $200 credit on the card IF you make a purchase within 3 months. Then if you register for the Assembly online with your card, $200 of that $495 fee will be covered by your credit! (You also get 2 free nights at a Marriott hotel IF you charge $3000 on your Marriott Card within 3 months of getting it.)

The first year there is no card fee; the second year, a fee of $95. If you wish, you can cancel before the renewal date. Be sure to look at the conditions. If it makes sense to you, AUSCP's 2019 Assembly can be yours at significantly reduced cost.
