Happy Labor Day!

Labor Day Prayer

Almighty God, you have so linked our lives one with another that all we do affects, for good or ill, all other lives: so guide us in the work we do, that we may do it not for self alone, but for the common good; and, as we seek a proper return for our own labor, make us mindful of the rightful aspirations of other workers, and arouse our concern for those who are out of work, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Season of Creation Begins Today

Pope Francis has called for a Season of Creation running each year from September 1 until October 4, the Feast of St. Francis. The Catholic Climate Covenant has many resources that can be used during this time to draw attention to the critical need of our times to care for the earth. One project is called the Catholic Energies Project. This is designed to benefit Catholic entities by providing experience, expertise, and financial resources, at no cost, to Catholic organizations that wish to install solar power and other energy efficient equipment. You can find out more about this and other resources at:

Season of Creation Reflections from NCR

Beginning Sunday, Sept. 1, NCR will publish Season of Creation Daily, a brief reflection sent to your inbox on each of the Season's 34 days. The daily reflections are authored by Peter McLoughlin, a member of the Care for Our Common Home committee at the Paulist Center in Boston. He designed the brief messages as "an opportunity to pause each day of the Season, reflect with gratitude on the gift of creation, consider the plight of the Earth and of those most impacted by environmental problems, and discern how we are called to respond." You can sign up here.

Cardinal Tobin to Speak at Immigration Rally

On Wednesday, Sept. 4th, 10 AM at the St. Mary’s Church/Newark Abbey, a coalition of Catholic sisters, priests, brothers, lay Catholic advocates and immigrants, including Cardinal Joseph Tobin, will gather to continue a strategic campaign to pressure the Trump administration and Congress to “stop the inhumanity.” The campaign calls for an end to the detention of children and families which is contrary to Gospel values.

The leaders will gather for a prayerful assembly before processing to the ICE Office at the Federal Building for a vigil which will include personal testimonies from clergy and long-time advocates based in New Jersey, as well as family members who have been impacted by our nation’s immoral immigration policies. As a part of the event, several Catholic leaders from many different organizations will engage in nonviolent civil disobedience and risk arrest to draw attention to this moral crisis.

Any AUSCP members who are able are encouraged to participate in the rally.

(Adapted from press release by Franciscan Action Network)

AUSCP Leadership Team member Ray Cole invites you to become aware of the activities of the Catholic Mobilizing Network:

Now that the Federal Death Penalty is being resuscitated, it seems appropriate that AUSCP respond. We are already registered with the Catholic Mobilizing Network as an organization. CMN also provides for individuals to sign up in defense of eliminating this violence against the the "...dignity of the person, which is not lost even after the commission of very serious crimes". Pope Francis recently changed Canon law to teach the "inadmissibility" in all cases, of the Death Sentence. In their Newsletter there is a link for you to sign on to the Pledge to End the Death Penalty.

CMN also provides a link to protest executions of individual persons on death row as their “green mile” draws closer. Here are the links to protest the executions scheduled for September:

Mark Soliz - September 10, Texas:  Take Action

Catholic Nonviolence Initiative Update

Catholic Nonviolence Initiative, a project of Pax Christi International, sends thanks for support and efforts to build a more peace-filled and nonviolent world. Update on efforts:

In April,CNI hosted a gathering, Path of Nonviolence: Towards a Culture of Peace, at the Vatican’s Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development in Rome. Approximately 75 theologians, peace practitioners, bishops, archbishops, social scientists, educators, and pastoral ministry workers met for two days to share a deeper conversation about mainstreaming nonviolence in the Church and in society.

Scam Warning!

An AUSCP member recently fell for an internet scam and lost thousands of dollars. The scam was through an email he received that claimed they had hacked his computer and gained access to passwords, damaging information, etc. He would like to be sure no one else falls for a scam, so this is an alert. Advice - Delete any such emails and block the sender. Also, change your main passwords to be safe.

Congratulations to Unbound!

Unbound is a major sponsor of the AUSCP Assemblies. Several AUSCP members are weekend preachers for Unbound. If you wish to volunteer or learn more, contact Paco Wertin at: pacow@unbound.org.
