John XXIII Award Nominees for 2020
The AUSCP Leadership Team is calling for nominations from our members for the Pope Saint John XXIII award to be presented at the 2020 AUSCP Assembly in June. This award is given to someone in the Church who has given exceptional witness to promoting the vision of the Second Vatican Council.
If you wish to nominate someone, please submit the name and contact information, along with three reasons why he or she should be considered. Nominee must be present at the Assembly to accept the reward. Send your nomination to: office@uscatholicpriests.org.
Deadline is December 31, 2019.
2020 Assembly Specials
AUSCP members are asked to help spread the word and encourage non-members, as well as members who have never attended an Assembly, to participate in the 2020 Assembly in June. To encourage this, the AUSCP is offering the following special rates:
- If an AUSCP member recruits a non-member to attend the Assembly and is willing to pay $100 of their registration fee, the AUSCP will match that and also pay $100, so the attendee will get a $200 discount on their registration fee;
- Likewise, if a member recruits another member who has never attended an Assembly and pays $100 toward their registration fee, the AUSCP will match that with $100, so the attendee will get a $200 discount on their registration fee.
This will need to be done by check because the online registration does not offer this option. For questions, call the AUSCP office at 872-205-5862.
Catholic Labor Network Supports Airline Food Service Workers

AUSCP member Gene Pocernich represented the Catholic Labor Network (CLN) at Chicago’s O’Hare airport on November 26th, supporting the airline food service workers as they called for better wages and benefits.
According to CLN, some 20,000 workers across the United States toil in kitchens preparing food and beverages for the nation’s major airlines, but fewer than 5% can afford the family health care insurance offered by their employers. That’s one reason workers rallied and picketed at more than a dozen major airports on November 26, just before the Thanksgiving travel rush. Many of these workers – most of them immigrants – are living on poverty wages.
More actions are planned. Information is available HERE.
Gathering for Mission
AUSCP member Les Schmidt, a Glenmary Home Missioner, spends most of his time with the Catholic Committee of the South's program Gathering for Mission. This is a program that invites the voice and vision of Pope Francis into dialogue at all levels of church leadership in the U.S. and Canada. Anyone interested in inviting this program into their parish, diocese, or conference can contact Les at: 704-408-3989 or FatherLes@gatheringformission.org
Book on Association of Pittsburgh Priests
Arthur J. McDonald has written a book on the Association of Pittsburgh Priests (APP), calling them "A Progressive Voice in the Catholic Church in the United States." The release on the book begins:
"In the summer of 1966, one year after the conclusion of the Second Vatican Council, a group of nineteen Roman Catholic priests met clandestinely in a church hall in a suburb of Pittsburgh to discuss forming an independent group of ordained clergy. Fearful that meeting publicly might be viewed as a threat to the authority of the local bishop, thus potentially risking sanctioning from him, they used numbers, not names, when circulating the minutes of the first two meetings. Once the word spread among the local clergy that such a group was meeting, and they realized there was widespread interest, they went public and invited all of Pittsburgh’s Catholic clergy, including the bishop, to their third meeting. They chose a name, the Association of Pittsburgh Priests (APP), and the group was launched."
You can read the entire review HERE. The book is available at: www.wipfandstock.com.
Annual Appeal Returns
The Annual Appeal mailing was sent out on October 11th on the feastday of Pope St. John XXIII and the opening date of the Second Vatican Council in 1962. Returns have been received from 280 persons for a total of $42,120. Thank you!
The Annual Appeal is the main source of income for the AUSCP! This year's goal is $150,000 from 450 donors. We need the support of all who believe in furthering the spirit of Vatican II and the agenda of Pope Francis. If you know any persons who are possible supporters of the AUSCP, approach them for a donation. Or, notify the office and we will send an appeal letter. Send the name and address to: office@uscatholicpriests.org.
Thank you for whatever support you are able to offer! We are counting on your generosity to help us move forward.
